App for dementia patients and AI-powered medication dispenser are the winners of Health Cup 2023!


The Health Cup Pitch Competition was held for the 4th consecutive year, on March 17th at 2:30 pm, in the auditorium of the incubator UBImedical | UBIExecutive, of the University of Beira Interior. The Health Cup is a seed capital competition that aims to support teams that intend to create companies in health and life sciences and implement them in UBImedical | UBIExecutive, rewarding innovative projects in these areas.

The 8 teams competing (Nina Technology, DemWell, EpigenWellness, Lugares Bons, Senior Sempre Seguro, Sensobox, C.T. based Lu Jong and VIA) presented challenging initiatives, namely bringing solutions for optimising and reducing absences to consultations and tests, an application dedicated to informal caregivers of people with dementia, an epigenetic healthcare programme, a programme to combat geopathologies, the development of a platform and wearables for monitoring the elderly, a medication dispenser using AI, a programme to develop the practice of Tibetan yoga (Lu Jong), and also a programme to collect geolocation data from seniors to combat isolation. The selection of the winners was made by a jury composed by Professor José Páscoa, Vice-Rector of UBI and director of UBImedical, Dr. António Aragão, IP & Innovation Consultant at RCF – Protecting Innovation and Dr. Pedro Maurício, Presales & Offer Leader in the Life Sciences Sector at Capgemini.

The winning teams were DemWell, which presented a mobile app dedicated to informal and freelance caregivers and institutions that provide care to people with dementia, with a person-centred approach, and the team Sensobox, which presented a smart medicine dispenser using AI to manage and organise medicines. Both teams won a prize of 5,000 euros each and a year of pre-incubation/acceleration in the entrepreneurial ecosystem of UBImedical | UBIExecutive.
