Innocup 2024 – UBImedical’s Seed Capital awarded 3 highly promising startups


On November 29th, 2024, the Pitch Competition of Innocup 2024 – Ubimedical’s Seed Capital took place. With 12 teams competing, the Pitch Competition’s jury members were Prof. João Carlos G Lanzinha (Associate Professor in the Civil Engineering and Architecture Department and Pro-Rector of UBI), Dr. António Sàágua (Executive Director of Hospital Privado das Beiras), and Dr. Antonio Aragao (IP and Innovation Consultant at RCF – Protecting Innovation). In the end, two teams were considered winners. The NanoDeteC team, which has developed a self-collection kit that makes it possible to identify pre-cancerous cell alterations at an early stage, which could later develop into cancer, and the Squalive team, which aims to extract squalene from olive pomace, aiming to achieve high yields and high purity of squalene, with a view to meeting the demands of the pharmaceutical industry. An honorable mention was also awarded to the Pureflow team, which developed a device that purifies air using modular UV-PCO technology, which can be installed in pre-existing ventilation networks. The two winning teams were awarded a cash prize of €5,000, entry into UBImedical’s accelerator program, and 1 year of free incubation in the incubator.
